The mode dial simplifies shooting mode selection. In addition to the all-purpose Auto Picture mode for automatic selection of the most appropriate shooting mode, the XG-1 also provides user-selectable options such as the Aperture-priority AE and Shutter-priority AE modes.

3.0-inch LCD monitor and electronic viewfinder. The Ricoh Pentax XG-1 features a high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor with approximately 460,000 dots for a large, clear view of the subject and menus. Its electronic viewfinder comes in handy when shooting in bright sunshine.
